Homeowner Rebates

This page covers home energy efficiency rebate and incentive programs available to Virginia homeowners, from state, federal, and utility sources. Programs and funding levels change; always confirm current details on the official page linked below.

Virginia home energy rebates

Virginia Energy, the state energy office, publishes information on federal Home Energy Rebate programs (HOMES and HEAR) as they become available in Virginia. See the official Virginia Energy Home Energy Rebates FAQ for current status, eligibility, and how to apply.

ENERGY STAR guidance and federal tax credits

ENERGY STAR, a joint program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Department of Energy, publishes guidance on home efficiency improvements and links to related federal tax credits for items such as insulation, heat pumps, windows, and doors.

Help paying an energy bill now

If you need help with a current energy bill rather than a rebate for a home improvement, see the Virginia Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), applied for through CommonHelp.

Check with your utility company

Many Virginia electric and gas utilities offer their own rebates for insulation, HVAC upgrades, and smart thermostats, separate from state and federal programs. Contact your utility provider directly, or check their official website, to see what is currently available in your service area.

Before you apply

Only use the official government or utility website; never pay a third party to "help" you access a rebate program
Save your receipts and any pre-approval documents your program requires; many rebate programs require you to apply or reserve funding before starting work
Funding for some rebate programs is limited and distributed on a first-come, first-served basis
