Tax Credits
This page summarizes where to find official information on Virginia state and federal tax credits for individuals. Tax credit rules, income limits, and amounts change by tax year; always confirm current details with the official source before filing.
Virginia state tax credits
The Virginia Department of Taxation publishes the full, current list of individual income tax credits. Two frequently used ones:
For the complete, current list, see Resources for Individual Taxpayers on Virginia Tax's website.
Federal tax credits
Federal tax credits, including the federal Earned Income Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit, and home energy efficiency credits, are administered by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Always use irs.gov for federal eligibility rules and current amounts.
How to claim a credit
Tax credits are claimed when you file your state and/or federal tax return, not through a separate application. If you use tax preparation software or a paid preparer, ask specifically whether you qualify for the credits listed on this page; many go unclaimed simply because taxpayers do not know to ask.
Before you file
